National infrastructure rehabilitation plan begins Friday

The Ministry of Works and Transport will formally launch its major infrastructure development plan Friday.

Works Minister Jack Warner told reporters at the post cabinet briefing that the project represents an investment of about $1.5 billion. It involves building and repairing box drains and pavements drains as well as paving roads.

The first project to start on Friday is in the Oropouche East Constituency with the second in Tabaquite. Others will get started in the next few days.

Warner noted that the road to be repaired in Tabaquite had been neglected for 32 years.

He said the program will cover all constituencies in the country, noting that his ministry launched the first project in La Brea, which is held by the opposition People's National Movement.

Warnyer said dozens of contractors will be involved in the nationwide project.

"I believe we will be using...91 contractors whose equipment have been idle for months if not years," he said. "So therefore this is meant to not only bring some joy and happiness to the people in the respective communities, but also for the contractors who have been idle."

The minister said the infrastructure works will help to stimulate the economy.

Warner stressed that the work will be of the highest standards since quality control inspectors will examine everything to ensure that there is no sub standard work. He said unlike other paving projects this is no election gimmick.

He also explained that there is coordination with the water and sewerage authority (WASA) to esnure that any mains replacement work is conducted before any paving. This, he said, would minimise the risk of having the road dug up shortly after resurfacing.
