Deosaran takes office Wednesday

Criminologist Professor Ramesh Deosaran take the oath of office Wednesday as the new chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Acting President Timothy Hamel-Smith will administer the oath in a simple ceremony at Knowsley, Queen’s Park West.

Deosaran, who is a former independent senator, succeeds Nizam Mohammed, whose appointed was rescinded last week by President Max Richards following controversial statements about what he said was an ethnic imbalance in the police service which he said he would change with the help of Parliament.

The government distanced itself from the comments noting that it has always supported the idea of a meritocracy in the country as opposed to any form of affirmative action.

However, it did not act against Mohammed since the PSC is an independent commission and its members are appointed or dismissed by the president.

Mohammed held the post for eight months. Other members of the PSC are Jacqueline Cheessman, Martin George and Kenneth Parker.
