President Richards summons Nizam for discussions

President Max Richards has summoned chairman of the Police Service Commission Nizam Mohammed for a meeting on Friday.

It comes on the heels of remarks by Mohammed that sparked a national debate and caused both the government and the opposition to condemn Mohammed.

The point of contention in Mohammed's statement to a Joint Select Committee of Parliament last Friday. He said there is an ethnic imbalance in the Police Service and added that he intends to use Parliament to fix it.

A government statement on Monday harshly criticised Mohammed and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley demanded that Mohammed be fired.

Mohammed confirmed that he will go with "an open mind" for the meeting with the president, adding that he does not know what is the subject of the meeting.

He insisted that he has done nothing wrong or breached any law so there is nothing to fear.

The constitution provides for the president to hire and fire members of service commissions, which are independent constitutional bodies. However there must be valid reasons for taking action in the case of dismissals.

Both Mohammed and his lawyer, Israel Khan, insist that there are no grounds for dismissal.
