Police are upset and angry over statements made by Nizam Mohammed Friday about the ethnic composition of the police service.
The chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) told a Joint Select Committee (JLC) that he wants to change the ethnic imbalance of the service, which he said is dominated by people of African origin.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Fitzroy Fredericks said last night Mohammed must be fired, adding that he was "farse and out of place" to say there are too many police officers of African descent on the executive of the Police Service.
"We are disturbed and hurt and we are not working with that," Fredericks told the Express newspaper, adding that police will not be working until Mohammed is removed.
Frederick has advised the Commissioner of Police that he intends to hold a news conference Sunday to "deal with the atrocious statements Mr Nizam Mohammed has made...We will also be calling for Mohammed to be removed as head of the PSC because he cannot be allowed to continue behaving in such manner."
The officer said, "We are not taking these matters lightly...we are not going to work until these issues are dealt with because it seemed they are trying to fan the flames of race and divide the Police Service, and we will not stand idly by and allow it to happen."
He called on fellow executive officers "to rally around me" to deal with the issue "head-on."
