Multiculturalism Minister Winston “Gypsy” Peters on Wednesday declared Carnival 2011 a resounding success.
“Carnival 2011 was nothing more than a success story,” Peters told reporters at a news conference at the Queen’s Park Savannah, noting that organisers achieved all their main goals, among them the relative safety for all.
He said another main goal was to bring visitors to the country for the two-day festivities. “We have done that. All the hotels and guest houses were filled. Carnival 2011 was a very successful one,” he stated.
The minister thanked NCC chairman Kenny de Silva, the commissioners, masqueraders and everyone who contributed to make Carnival 2011 what it was.
Peters acknowledged that not everything was perfect and promised that Carnival 2012 will be better. “It’s a work in progress,” he said.
De Silva said Carnival 2011 was one of the biggest ever in terms of masquerader participation and attributed it to the return to the Savannah. “More people played mas than previous years and it had to do with the lovely, new facilities at the Savannah,” he said.
De Silva also stated that financially, Carnival 2011 was a big success. “You couldn’t get a flight coming to T&T. All the airlines were booked completely.”
