Jack drops in at Sando licensing office, orders action to end long delays

Jack Warner made an impromptu visit to the San Fernando Licensing Office on Tuesday to investigate some of the complaints of people who use the facilities.

“We have had too many reports of a lackadaisical approach to work there. People complaining that it is taking too long to get their licence renewed, transfer certificates taking too long, and a host of problems,” he told reporters.

“I wanted to see for myself what has been going down there. I have received so many reports from the public, and if they were true, that cannot be right,” he added.

Following the visit the Works and Transport Minister concluded that “there was some justification in people’s complaints, and we are addressing them, in terms of how much time they spend there to get attention. It should not take them eight and nine and ten hours. That is what is happening and it is much too long. We shall address those problems.”

Among the problems the minister found for the long waiting times were a lack of working cameras for drivers' permit photos and staff still making payment records by hand. He said it is time for the office to cut service waiting times and move into the computer age.

He instructed that the problems with cameras and printers be corrected. A second camera has since been added. He also asked the senior personnel to ensure that they stop the manual registry of payments.

“I myself have seen them putting information in a cashbook...I told the staff this has to stop. This is 2011, in the computer age we still handwriting in a book, who pay, how much money they pay, and so on, and so on. I mean this is ridiculous and those are the things that have to stop, and stop now,” Warner declared.

There was also a complaint that the cashier’s department closes for lunch, when most customers take that period to transact business.

Warner promised that would end, saying a system must be put in place to ensure that the cashier at San Fernando remain open during the luncheon period.

Warner also visited the Chaguanas Licensing Office and promised that he to relocate it to a better and more convenient location within four to five weeks.
