Humphrey testifies at 1990 coup probe Monday

Former cabinet minister John Humphrey is scheduled to testify on Monday before the commission of enquiry in the failed 1990 Muslimeen coup.

Witnesses who appeared before the commissioners in the first session of the probe alleged that Humphrey delayed the release of hostages from the Red House by insisting that the deal to free everyone be given in writing.

Humphrey was at the time sitting as an opposition MP after being fired from cabinet by the then Prime Minister A.N.R. Robinson.

So far the commission has heard from Robinson, former NAR ministers Joseph Toney, Jennifer Johnson and Emmanuel Hosein; MPs Rawle Raphael and Raymond Palackdharrysingh; media personality Emmett Hennesy, Trinidad Broadcasting employee, Pius Mason; and member of the public Wendell Eversley.

The Commission comprises chairman Sir David Simmons, Sir Richard Cheltenham, security expert Dr Haffizool Ali-Mohammed and former independent senators Eastlyn McKenzie and Diana Mahabir-Wyatt.
