Highway cable barriers going up soon

Director of Highways Roger Ganesh confirmed on Thursday that the installation of cable barriers along the Uriah Butler and Solomon Hochoy highways will begin next month.

Minister of Works and Transport Jack Warner announced the project last year, stating that is meant to prevent highway crossover crashes, which have caused several road deaths. The installation work was supposed to start last month.

Ganesh told reporters the delay is because of the tendering process, noting that eight local companies have tendered for the $21 million project. He said he hopes there will be an award by the end of next week.

"I am really anxious because we are behind schedule. If we make the award by next week, we can get work started within the next two weeks so I am looking to get the work started by the end of March.

"It would not take long to get the work done. For the most it will take to actually get the work done on the ground would be three weeks maximum," Ganesh said.

The plan is for the entire length of the Solomon Hochoy Highway and the Uriah Butler Highway to have barriers, with the dangerous Claxton Bay area getting priority.
