Frankie edges out Penny to take the post of PNM chairman

The People's National Movement (PNM) on Sunday elected Franklin Khan as its new chairman, with Khan defeating his rival, Senator Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, by just three votes.

It was the most hotly contested position in the party's internal election for a new executive. Voting was through a delegate system unlike the one-member, one vote process used by Trinidad and Tobago's two other major parties - the United National Congress (UNC) and the Congress of the People (COP).

Former Prime Minister and PNM leader Patrick Manning had asked delegates from his San Fernando East constituency to abstain from voting, saying  he did not wish to appear to be influencing the result.

Khan served as Works and Transport Minister in the Manning administration and also held the post of PNM chairman. He quit both posts several years ago after he was accused of corruption. The matter never went to trial since the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided to drop all charges.

Delegates also elected former Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis as Vice Chairman. She ran against former Works Minister in the last Manning administration, Colm Imbert.

And they chose Tobago House of Assembly Chief Secretary, Orville London, and former Culture Minister Joan Yuille Williams, as Deputy Political Leaders.

Donna Cox, the MP for Laventille East/Morvant won the nod for the post of Lady Vice Chairman and former PSA President Jennifer Baptiste Primus was elected Labour Relations Officer.

PNM Senator Faris Al-Wari won election as the party's Public Relations Officer. Former Minister in the Finance Minister Mariano Browne was elected unopposed as the party's treasurer and former Information Minister Neil Parsanlal is the new Education Officer. He too was elected unopposed.

Former Senator Laurel Lezama Lee Sing is the party's female youth officer and delegates elected Joycelyn Bodden as the PNM's welfare officer.
