Joyce Boodoo cuddles her infant grandaughter whose mom died shortly after delivery at the San Fernando General Hospital |
Cumberbatch said Wednesday the board of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) has agreed to investigation. Minister of Health Therese Baptiste-Cornelis has been briefed on the woman's death.
An autopsy by pathologist Hubert Daisley revealed that the cause of death was hypovolaemic shock, poor hysterectomy, and Caesarean Section. Hypovolaemic shock results from severe blood loss which makes the heart unable to pump blood through the body.
Ramsoomair's family told reporters officials told them that two arteries were mistakenly cut during the delivery and doctors were unaware of the source of the blood loss until the autopsy.
The Health Ministry said in a media release that it has contacted the family to "discuss their concerns and has offered all necessary counselling".
Ramsoomair lived at St Mary's Village Freeport, with her husband Lorne Ramsoomair, son Christian, five, and 18-month-old daughter Sarah. The baby delivered by C-section before the woman's death is healthy.
Family members reported that Ramsoomair's pregnancy was normal and that the family doctor recommended that a trusted doctor at the hospital perform the C-section.
The procedure was done and the baby girl was delivered, apparently without complications. However, family members reported that Ramsoomair complained of feeling dizzy and weak when she was returned to the ward.
Joyce Boodoo, Ramsoomair's 60-year- old mother, told the Trinidad Express, she pulled back the sheets and discovered massive amounts of blood.
Boodoo said health care professionals administered drugs and gave her daughter eight pints of blood before doctors performed a hysterectomy to try to save the young woman's life. They failed; Ramsoomair died in the Intensive Care Unit.
Ramsoomair's father told reporters he will be filing a medical negligence lawsuit.
