Security authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have installed high-tech closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras throughout the country and have deployed troops at strategic locations to guarantee public safety.
On Friday Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar visited the command centre at Police Headquarters from where officers will be keeping an eye on what's happening in the country during Carnival.
She said while the priority is to protect citizens during the festivities the cameras will remain in place especially to keep an eye on schoolchildren.
"There is a programme in place to keep a special eye on the children during the hours when they are coming to school, the hours when they are leaving school and through these CCTV cameras again, with respect to the fights that break out, whether they be at City Gate or wherever they are getting their transport, there is a greater handle on that," she said.
"I must say I've been very impressed with what I'm seeing at our Command Centre," she said. She said cameras have been installed at specific locations that police identified, adding that soon there will be more cameras.
She also said rapid-response teams will be able to respond quickly to any illegal activity.
With respect to safety of people playing mas in bands, she said each band will have a GPS equipment that would allow police to track the band's movement.
