Baby dies in womb at San Fernando General Hospital; family seeking answers

A woman whose baby died in her womb at the San Fernando General Hospital is asking the South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) to explain why her healthy baby died while she waited for a caesarean section.

In addition to the trauma of losing the baby, the woman had to wait several hours for medical staff to remove the dead baby.

According to media reports, Simone Critchlow-Taylor, 27, was sent to the hospital with a note from her doctor for an emergency caesarean section to deliver her baby, who had grown to about 10 pounds. Medical staff determined that it was not an emergency and delayed the procedure.

Crichlow-Taylor’s sister, Alicia Regis, told local media the family is confused about what happened.

Regis said the baby appeared to be growing rapidly in the womb. “He moved from 10 pounds on March 3 and by weekend was 15 lbs.”

She disputes suggestions by medical personnel that diabetes may have caused the baby’s rapid weight gain and subsequent death, saying there is no family history of diabetes. She is also concerned about the way her sister was treated.

"The family remains baffled as to how at ten o’clock Saturday morning, a doctor examined my sister and said the baby was healthy and had a good heart rate, but by six in the evening, we were told that the baby had died,” Regis said.

She said the family is deeply concerned about the attitude of medical staff who seemed not to care about what was happening.

“Why should a dead baby remain in someone for so long? The doctors told us it could remain there up to six weeks and there was no danger once the water bag did not burst,” Regis said.

She said it took hours of "begging and pleading" with doctors before Critchlow-Regis was taken into the operating room on Sunday morning to have the corpse removed. She added that one doctor "came to the bed" and apologised to the couple.

The SWRHA issued a media release offering condolences to Critchlow-Taylor.

“The SWRHA views with concern the feedback from the baby’s relatives with respect to treatment at the hospital and wishes to assure them the matter will be looked into,” the release said.
