Representatives of the T&T Taxi Drivers Network (TTTDN) have been assured of a meeting Wednesday with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to discuss concerns over the legalising of PH taxi operators.
Gary Griffith, national security adviser to the Prime Minister, met with members of the TTTDN Monday outside the Prime Minister’s office and advised them that Persad-Bissessar will meet them at the Red house.
The association claims that since Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner announced plans to regularise the PH operations taxis have been getting an increased amount of competition. They say it is becoming difficult for them to earn a living.
They claim the PH vehicles are boldly operating from legitimate taxi stands as if they are registered hired vehicles.
The taximen insist that Warner is wrong to seek to legalise the PH business since there is a process in place for people to obtain a legal taxi operator's badge. Warner has argued that the PH operators offer a vital service especially in rural areas where regular taxis refuse to operate.
