PM Kamla briefed on CARICOM security issues


Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday received a courtesy call from Antuguan cabinet minister Senator Errol Cort, who is the Chair of the Council for National Security and Law Enforcement (CONSLE).

He visited Persad-Bissessar in her capacity as Head of CARICOM’s Crime and Security Council.

Lynne Anne Williams, Executive Director for CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), accompanied the minister. Also present was Trinidad and Tobago's national Security Minister Brig. General John Sandy.

Cort briefed the Prime Minister on some issues of importance for the 22nd Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Grenada from 25-26 February 2011, which Persad-Bissessar is scheduled to attend. 

The issues include Trinidad and Tobago's budget contribution. Cort thanked Trinidad and Tobago for its financial support to the Regional Crime and Security agenda.

He noted that because economic conditions that continue to plague many Caricom States, alternate measures are being considered for sustainability. 

He also briefed Persad-Bissessar on the Caribbean Basin security Initiative between CARICOM and the US. He said there are many issues which need to be clarified with the US in relation to the CBSI vis-a-vis CARICOM.

Cort also discussed with Persad-Bissessar the possibility of holding a stakeholders symposium in Trinidad and Tobago in April -June 2011to provide a forum at which security practitioners, experts, criminologists and stakeholders can brainstorm strategies to advance regional safety and security initiatives.

Civil society as well as the media will be invited to participate, he said, noting that they too have a responsibility when it comes to safety and security.
