The National Trade Union Centre (NATUC), which is led former Senator Michael Annisette, is planning a hunger strike for March 19.
Annisette made the announcement Saturday at a meeting at the Transport and Industrial Workers’ Union offices, Laventille attended by representatives from several unions.
It will be part of a mass protest to be held on a date that has not yet been determined.
The events start with a vigil on March 11, beginning at Woodford Square and ending at Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s residence. The action is to press demands for a better wage deal for public sector workers. The government is offering five per cent.
“In order to withstand the five per cent offer, which has no economic morality or basis, we decided to co-ordinate our efforts,” Annisette told workers.
He said Natuc told the Prime Minister last week that its members were not involved in decisions and suggested that it is a deliberate attempt to isolate the organisation.
He dismissed the the five per cent offer as a “fiscal consolidation measure that is rooted in an austerity approach". He said workers, who produce the wealth a naton, must guard against such measures.
