It is more than a little ironic for our CoP to be advising the population against using excessive force when confronted by the most brutal and savage home invaders, such as recently happened to the Hosein and Ali families in Barrackpore.
As it is currently constituted, the modus operandi of our Police Service sees it mainly operating in a post mortem role. The crime is committed, the police are called, they arrive maybe two to four hours after (they only come right away if it’s murder), note the particulars and leave.
In a precious few instances a perpetrator is apprehended and the matter goes to court forever and ever.
What the majority of citizens need for their personal, family and community protection is preventative security. Unfortunately, the only way to achieve this is for communities to band together and hire private security.
Indeed, many middle class communities in Trinidad are spending up to $50,000 a month on security. It is the only way to achieve even a minimum level of security at home and I would urge all residential communities to organise themselves in this manner to help prevent these horrendous home invasions.
