The government of Trinidad and Tobago is investing $19.5 million on 24 buses to transport physically challenged persons.
Minister of the People Dr Glen Ramadharsingh made the announcement Thursday. He told reporters some of the buses will have seating for 12 persons and the other will be able to carry 15 passengers.
They will form part of a special services unit within the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC). Ramadharsingh said a ministerial committee would meet to consider proposals to set up a wheelchair bus service nationwide.
He also proposed a special public transport service for the elderly, who make up 12 per cent of the population.
The Elderly Mobile Shuttle Transport Program would offer “safe, accessible, affordable and scheduled” transport to both the able-bodied and disabled elderly. He said transport hubs operate from strategic locations including banks, health centres, nursing homes and shopping centres.
