SporTT employees could face criminal charges: Roberts

Sports Minister Anil Roberts told reporters Thursday several individuals are facing the possibility of being charged with criminal offences arising out of the discovery of a $90 million discrepancy at the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT).

Roberts said a final report is still being prepared and "it does not look good for certain individuals". At the same time he made it clear that he is not pre-empting the role of the proper authorities.

"I come from a legal family and I'm saying only the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) can charge, however, it does not look good for certain individuals," Roberts said.

Last Friday SporTT suspended more than 100 employees based on the "messy" financial documents relating to what Roberts said was a $90 million discrepancy and the squandering of hundreds of millions of dollars between 2004 and 2010. Many of the employees have since returned to work.

"There will be a new relationship between the Ministry and the SporTT Company. Before there was no correlation whatsoever," Roberts told reporters.

"The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs is chief accounting officer at the Ministry and will now be the chief accounting officer for the SporTT company also so there will be levels of executive manager, CEO, corporate secretary, Board and then the Permanent Secretary so that everybody will be on the same page," he said.
