PM Kamla wants quick action on death penalty bill

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar called on the Opposition Wednesday to speed up legislation to deal with the death penalty legislation.

Persad-Bissessar made the comment to reporters at the Hyatt after a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) workshop. She was responding to questions about increasing murders.
She reminded the media that Opposition Leader Keith Rowley had suggested that the matter be left until April.

Rowley is now campaigning for support in the People's National Movement (PNM) national convention, which is being held on March 20. He has said although the PNM agrees in principle with the death penalty he wants time to discuss the issue with party members.

The media had another issue on their agenda - the controversy over the hiring and resignation of Reshmi Ramnarine as director of the SSA.

However the Prime Minister was not interested in discussing that matter and suggested to the media that since the lady has now resigned it's time to move on.

Rowley is not satisfied with that and plans to raise the matter in Parliament.
