Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Tuesday she has full confidence in Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis amid speculation that she would be moving the minister from her portfolio.
“Absolutely not. I have no intention of moving her,” Persad-Bissessar said in response to rumours that Deputy Speaker Dr Fuad Khan would soon replace Baptiste-Cornelis.
Khan, who is vice chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) and the MP for Barataria-San Juan, previously served as a Junior Health Minister in the Panday UNC administration.
There has been speculation about a cabinet shuffle, which grew more intense with the move of Rudy Indarsingh from the works Ministry to Labour. Persad-Bissessar indicated in a speech Sunday that more changes are coming but she was emphatic that she was satisfied with all her senior ministers.
She reiterated that on Tuesday.
Baptiste-Cornelis told reporters she had not heard the rumour. “As far as I am aware the PM has said she is moving around some of the junior ministers but again if she chooses to move around her senior ministers it is totally in her purview."
She also noted that she has had no conversation with the Prime Minister about any changes and has a “very good” relationship with the Persad-Bissessar.
