National Trade Union Centre to stage protest on January 28

The National Trade Union Centre’s (Natuc) announced Thursday that it plans to stage a day of protests on January 28 to show its displeasure with the government.

Natuc president Michael Annisette said the plans discussed at an emergency meeting of the organisation's general council.

Calling the protest ‘White Friday’ Annisette said Natuc members would march from Port-of-Spain to the Prime Minister’s Office in St Clair to hand-deliver four letters to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

He said to date the government has sfailed to acknowledge three letters written between May and December last year requesting meetings with the PM to discuss critical labour issues. He said the government's attitude is pushing the labour organisation to take whatever action is necessary to save the country.

He said he is not prepared to give the government an opportunity to respond. “If you write someone three letters and they don’t respond, what would you do?...We have done everything expected of a responsible organisation but we are getting no response on our requests for meaningful dialogue," he said.

The 'White Friday' protest coincides with a mass demonstration planned by the Public Services Association (PSA) to protest the failure of government's Chief Personnel Officer (CPO) to settle wage demands for public sector workers.

The COP's best offer to date is a five per cent increase. The PSA is demanding nothing less than 10 per cent. PSA President Watson Duke has threatened serious action to get a better deal for his members.

“We have weapons of mass destruction,” he declared earlier in the week without giving an explanation of what he meant. “We are incensed. We are mad. Every single public officer has the right to be mad and hateful towards the Government.”
