COP supports PM Kamla in move to reinstate death penalty

The Congress of the People said Saturday is supports the initiative by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to reinstate the death penalty as a punishment for murder.

A media release from Vernon De Lima, Chairman of the party's Crime Committee, said COP is encouraged "by the firm resolve that the PP Coalition Government has shown on the legislative aspect of crime fighting."

De Lima said the party is particularly pleased with the new proposal enunciated Persad Bissessar to remove obstacles "that will allow the death penalty to be effected within the rule of law and the creation of three categories of murder."

The brief media release added, "The COP has always placed crime as a major concern of the nation and looks forward to other measures in crime fighting at the level of prevention, detection and enforcement."
