COP congratulates national team for winning T20 championship

The Congress of the People (COP) on Monday extended congratulations to the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team for winning the Twenty20 championship on Sunday.

The national team overcame their inspirational captain Daren Ganga being sidelined with a hand injury to be crowned the new Caribbean Twenty20 champions, following a resounding 36-run victory over Hampshire

Ganga was a non-starter, after he suffered a split “webbing” on his left hand during Saturday’s second semi-final against Jamaica.

But the Red Force, as they now call themselves, bowled with discipline to follow-up gutsy batting, and limited Hampshire to 111 for eight, after they set the English Twenty20 champions 148 for victory in the Grand Final at Kensington Oval.

Scores:
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 147 for seven off 20 overs (Darren Bravo 41, Denesh Ramdin 33 not out, Lendl Simmons 31; Danny Briggs 2-9, Benny Howell 2-14)

HAMPSHIRE 111 for eight off 20 overs (Benny Howell 28 not out, James Vince 23; Jason Mohammed 2-6, Kevon Cooper 2-15)

In a media release COP Chairman Joe Toney said, "From the very first ball in Antigua our National Cricketers competed like winners. Thereafter, they triumphed game after game in a most professional manner.

"Ably led by Captain Ganga, our batsmen and bowlers looked their best and played their best. As Caribbean Champions, we have now qualified for the AIRTEL T20 Championship in India, later this year.

"We have every confidence that our National cricketers will make us proud. Their commitment to duty, fighting spirit, patriotism are values that young and old should emulate. Congratulations once again and best wishes for future successes from the Congress of the People."
