Sandy happy with police training; CoP Gibbs sees need for strong 'customer service'

National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy is pleased with what he has seen at the Police Training Academy and has urged Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs to ensure that graduates maintain the high standards and discipline that are taught to them.

Sandy made the comments following a tour of the training facility. Sandy added that every day police officers put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of the nation, admitting the job is often riddled with challenges, particularly in what he described as the "dangerous crime situation". He said there are plans to further upgrade the academy with high standards and training.

Gibbs noted significant infrastructural changes at the academy and stressed that while officers are trained in procedural rules, policy and understanding of criminal justice, customer service remains at the heart of the police service.

He said this aspect of policing would be able to accomplish far more than expected. "We all know that if we hire the right people, train them well, our service would provide the type of delivery to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago that we require," Gibbs said.
