Hundreds of children and their parents gathered in front their homes and at street corners along the route where the Prime Minister and her entourage passed in a motorcade. She traveled in a pick-up truck, stopping along the way and handing out gifts.
Some of her helpers dressed in Santa outfits rode ahead of her on motorcycles and vans, handing out presents to the children who stood in the rain to receive their Christmas gifts.
Persad-Bissessar immersed herself in the exercise, which she began as an annual event when she first became the MP for Siparia. This year, because she is now the Prime Minister, she decided to expand it to cover the whole country.
During the past weeks she treated well over 20,000 children at six venues, including Tobago, at no cost to the taxpayers. All funds to stage the events and purchase gifts and treats for the children came from the business community and private donors.
