Letter: Rowley's shameless row

The strident call by Dr. Keith Rowley for greater accounting by the Government over the SIA files is one of the most shameless acts of the Opposition in its maiden term.

Proclaiming loudly that the illegal evidence gathering has been ongoing for ten years, and that the PM has not handled the matter at all satisfactorily, the good doctor appears unfazed by the fact that the unholy mess has been bequeathed by his party of which he is now the leader, and for which gross transgressions he offers absolutely no apologies or responsibility.

Not only was the entire misfeasance committed by his party and leadership in its initiation, but the personnel attached to the unit were handpicked and selected for fealty extending beyond the term of office of his government.

In effect, Dr. Rowley’s party continued to violate the nation’s security and people by continuing to receive confidential reports which ought never to have been authorized or initiated, and for which no account has ever been offered or responsibility shouldered.

Indeed, the files he demands protection from were always in the possession of his party’s official or officials so far unidentified.

Largely in the main initially dismissing the files as immaterial since they had nothing to hide, Opposition members and former Ministers have all claimed no knowledge of the matter, but all are agreed that somehow they and the public and the nation are now all at grave risk, because the PM has not given concrete assurances against their former dereliction and continued protestations of innocence.

That the PM has immediately passed a law with their enforced support to make possession or use of any such files severely punishable by law, and thereby insulated everyone from any form of blackmail by merely reporting threats since the files’ contents may not be used, has not impressed the Opposition leader for inexplicable reasons.

Dr. Rowley appears not to be reading the news, since an Express investigative report has confirmed MP Volney’s revelation that Israeli personnel from the supply firm of the SIA equipment did erase the files.

At this time, it seems clear that the issue of the SIA ought to revert to secrecy protected as we are by the new law, and the competent authority be left to secure whatever is necessary.

As the PNM facilitated crime and gun population and now is clamoring for Government action and effectiveness to bring it all under immediate control equally shamelessly, their call for further action by the PM is without merit.

If he does file his motion, the Government should respond by blanketing the issue under national security and call on the former members of the prior government to clear their names and breasts in order to reassure the nation of their lack of culpability in this deplorable affair.

Manning has so far brazenly reaffirmed the necessity for the illegal actions he clearly mandated. How Dr. Rowley could imagine he has any moral basis for his demands is nothing less than insane.
