PM Kamla sends shipload of relief supplies to St Vincent

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has sent a Coast Guard Vessel to St Vincent with relief supplies for the people of the island, which suffered severe damage from Hurricane Tomas.  

A media release from the office of the Prime Minister said Persad-Bissessar and her counterpart in St Vincent, Ralph Gonzalves have been in regular communication since Tomas hit the island last week.

On Thursday Gonzalves sent Persad-Bissessar a list of urgently needed after she said she is willing to do what she can to help.

Last week Persad-Bissessar announcing a "Helping Hand" project to offer assistance to the islands that have been devastated by Tomas. On Friday she went to St Lucia to survey the damage.

She has offered assistance to the island "with no strings attached" although she told government officials she in unable to provide the $3 billion in assistance the country needs for reconstruction.

And she has already dispatched two vessels with supplies for the islands.

Persad-Bissessar has thanked the local private sector "for their tremendous assistance in partnering with the government of Trinidad and Tobago in the timely delivery of aid to affected islands," the release said.
