New Caribean Airlines chairman pledges to make CAL the airline of choice

Businessman George Nicholas pledged on Wednesday to make Caribbean Airlines Ltd (CAL) the airline of choice for people traveling within the Caribbean region.

Nicholas made the statement to the media following by installation as the airline's new chairman. The new board meets Thursday to assess the needs of the company.

"This is the listening phase for the board...we will begin a process of listening to the executives of the company, listening to the staff of the company and listening to the passengers and we highly welcome response from our passengers," Nicholas said.

Nicholas is the son of hotelier and businessman Issa Nicholas. He told reporters his experience in business will be an asset to the airline.

Acting Prime Minister and Transport Minister Jack Warner presented Nicholas with his instruments of appointment.

Warner said he is hoping that Cabinet will decide at its meeting Thursday on a board for the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago. He said a priority for that board would be to fix the lighting system at the country's airports.

"That will be top priority obviously because that is an area of safety and we have to be mindful of our passengers and when the board comes in that would be the board's top priority," the minister said.
