Let's build a society that respects all religions and races: PM Kamla

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said on Thursday her Government is determined to build a society of inclusiveness in which all religions and races would be respected.

In a speech at to close the annual Divali Nagar she said everyone all citizens must be able to practise their culture without hindrances or ridicule from others.

She also paid tribute to foundation members of the Divali Nagar, noting the organisation had advanced the discussion of multiculturalism and equality in the country. She urged the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) to approach the Ministry of Multiculturalism to initiate a theatre and playwriting project.

The Prime Minister said the objectives of the project must include a view of fostering cross-cultural understanding among all citizens.

She said leaders have a responsibility to ensure that no one's freedom of expression is curtailed, noting that citizens must never feel restricted in the practise of their religion and culture.
