Rowley is boss; PNM no confidence motion fails to make it to General Council

The General Council of the opposition People's National Movement unanimously pledged its support Wednesday for party leader Dr Keith Rowley, effectively killing talk of a motion of no confidence against Rowley, who took over the leadership in June.

Some members had been talking about the the motion and were planning to have it debated Wednesday with lobbying taking place for and against at the constituency levels.

However the General Council convened a meeting ahead of a weekend retreat and endorsed the leader.

Rowley told the media after the special meeting that he was aware of the talk of the no confidence motion. However the matter did not arise when party top brass met. “I treated it as a rumour but there were very strong rumours that that was going to happen. But it did not manifest itself in any reality,” he said.

“Those rumours attracted some lively debate in the council and as political leader, I’m pleased to report that the council in all its sub-units, including the Women’s League, resoundingly endorsed the decisions taken by the party convention in June to elect and support me as political leader,” Rowley added.

“Contrary to what was said in the rumours of Tuesday and yesterday—that persons would have been making certain positions available to the council for adjudication—no such thing happened. What happened is that people heard that such things might have happened and expressed themselves on behalf of their constituencies and on behalf of their Women’s League and on their personal behalf," Rowley said.

He suggested that some people "might not be enamoured that I am political leader of the PNM" but noted that if such a view exists it was not shown at the level of the Geneeral Council.

“The council represents PNMites from all over T&T and they, too, would have heard those rumours and they addressed the rumours by expressing their position. So rumours were confronted with reality,” Rowley said, adding that he feels "fortified" by the party's position.

The PNM holds constituency elections next month to be followed by its annual convention in January 2011. The party will elect its national executive at that time but the post of political leader is not open. Rowley will hold that position until 2015.
