Police shot and killed a kidnapper Wednesday who had been holding his wife hostage in a home in South Trinidad.
They freed Giselle Balkaran-Phillip from her kidnapper, Andre "Rabbit" Phillip, who was released from prison two months ago.
The woman had been trapped in an abusive relationship and had escaped to her mother's home in Point Fortin. Last week her husband kidnapped her at gunpoint.
On Wednesday police responded to reports that woman was heard screaming in a house on la Brea. They killed a pit bull that attacked them and went inside where Phillip confronted them, firing at the officers.
Police shot Phillip in the chest; he was pronounced dead at the Point Fortin District Hospital.
Police found the victim in a bedroom and took her to the Point Fortin District Hospital, where she was treated before being reunited with her children.
Phillip had 40 previous convictions, ranging from drug offences to kidnapping, police said.
