Freundel Stuart was sworn-in Saturday as the new Prime Minister of Barbados. He succeeds David Thompson, who died at his home early Saturday morning. The country's new Attorney General is Adriel Brathwaite.
Stuart was first elected to the legislature in 1994 and was Deputy Prime Minister, Attorney General and Home Affairs Minister in the Thompson government.
He holds a LL.M in Public International law and a Legal Education Certificate from the High Wooding law School. Stuart is single and has a daughter.

Thompson's farewell letter to constituents
Former Trinidad and Tobago Caricom Ambassador Kamluddin Mohammed told JYOTI Saturday he is saddened by Thompson's passing. And he expressed his condolences to the Thompson family and the people of Barbados.
Mohammed served as Caricom ambassador in the Panday UNC government. Before that he was a senior PNM cabinet minister and one of the architects of the regional integration movement. He said Thompson's death is a loss not only to Barbados but the entire region.

UNC Condolences:
The United National Congress (UNC) of Trinidad and Tobago also extended condolences to Thompson's widow, Marie-Josephine Mara Thompson, her children and the People of Barbados on the passing of Thompson.
In a statement Saturday afternoon the governing party's International Relations Officer, Shane Mohammed, said: "Prime Minister Thompson was indeed a visionary leader to the people of Barbados, who commanded the respect not only of his own fellowmen but throughout the Caribbean."
The statement added, "In the midst of a global financial downturn, the demands and international disadvantages that faced the Caribbean region, Prime Minister Thompson stood out as a pioneer for Caribbean Equality and the importance of CARICOM on the International Market.
"Truly, the Late Prime Minister was a man of character and charisma. His accomplishments, his ideologies and his brilliance are a great loss to the charming people of Barbados and the Caribbean on a whole.
"The United National Congress prays that Almighty God will bestow strength and comfort to the bereaved family and to his beloved people of Barbados.
"May God Grant the late Honourable David Thompson QC, eternal peace and serenity. He will be missed."
