COP members voting in internal election

Thousands of registered members of the Congress of the People (COP) are voting Sunday in the party's internal elections at polling stations located across the country.

The election is based on a one-member, one-vote system, similar to the electoral process used by the United National Congress.

The post of Political leader is not being contested. Winston Dookeran holds that office until 2012. Only five posts are open.

• Vice chairman: Vernon De Lima; Dr Surendra Rampersad; Rawle Raphael
• Secretary, membership and mobilisation: Ashaki Scott; Chi Kamose; Dr Michael C
• Secretary, public relations: Mahendra Dhaniram; Curtis Orr
• Secretary, elections and voter registration: Mulchan Lewis; Wendell Eversley

Candidates for four others have been elected unopposed: 

• Secretary, finance: Dr Anirudh Mahabir
• Secretary, communications: Dr Omar Ali
• Secretary, education and research: Clyde Weathehead 
• Secretary, field operations: Sarwanand Ragbir
