COP launches public meetings for executive elections; 4 members elected unopposed

The Congress of the People (COP) on Wednesday launched the first of five National Executive Elections Public Meetings in Arima. The MP for Arima, Rodger Samuel, congratulated the candidates for the elections and delivered the feature address.

Another meeting is scheduled for Friday at COP's Operation Centre at which St Augustine MP and Deputy Political Leader, Prakash Ramadhar will be the featured speaker.

Other meetings:
  • Monday11th October: Flagship House, Port of Spain. Feature address: Deputy Political Leader Wendy Lee Yuen 
  • Wednesday 13th October: COP’s Corner, 9-11 Quenca St, San Fernando. feature address - Carolyn Seepersad Bachan, MP San Fernando West
  • Friday 15th October, Tunapuna Constituency Office, Tunapuna MP. Feature COP leader Winston Dookeran
Nominations for the executive posts closed Monday. Candidates for four posts have been elected unopposed: Secretary Finance - Dr. Anirudh Mahabir; Secretary Communications - Dr. Omar Ali; Secretary Education and Research - Clyde Weatherhead and Secretary Field Operations - Sarwanand Ragbir.
 
The following candidates are running for the other posts: 
  • Chairman: Joseph Toney, Hulsie Bhaggan
  • Vice Chairman: Vernon De Lima, Dr. Surendra Rampersad, Rawle Raphael 
  • Secretary Membership & Mobilisation: Ashaki Scott, Chi Kamose, Dr. Michael Calix 
  • Secretary of Public Relations: Mahendranath Dhaniram, Curtis Orr
  • Secretary Elections and Voter Registration - Mulchan Lewis, Wendell Eversley
Election for the post of Political Leader is held every 3 years and is due in 2012. The other positions are for a two-year term.

The election will be held on Sunday October 17 at six polling stations in Trinidad and one in Tobago. The election is based on a one member, one vote system.
