The Sunday Guardian says Trinidad and Tobago is facing a serious squatting problem with more than 200,000 persons living on lands they don't own.
It attributes the data to Dr Allen Sammy, CEO of the Land Settlement Agency (LSA). It quotes Sammy as saying there are 25,000 squatting families living on state lands with a further 25,000 occupying private properties. Sammy's estimate means that one seventh of the national population is squatting.
“This problem is really big," It quoted Sammy as saying. “If you can’t provide an alternative for people, then how can you stop them?”
The paper says the authorities are working on finding a solution, which includes as a matter of urgency the reduction of jurisdictional bottlenecks.
