PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Works Minister and FIFA Vice President Jack Warner meet the players at the opening of the FIFA Women's U-17 tournament in Port of Spain Sunday.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday sent a congratulatory message to the victorious Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Under-17 team on their historic 2-1 victory against Chile in the World Cup Under-17 finals at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Sunday evening.
Persad-Bissessar, who met the players of both teams before the game, said the victory by the Soca Princesses was as a result of hard work and commitment from team members and the technical staff.
She said the young players created history by being the first national team to win a match in a World Cup Final tournament.
Trinidad and Tobago had been winless in previous World Cup tournaments – Under 17 Men in 2001 and 2007 in Korea; Under-20 Men in 1989 in Portugal and 2009 in Egypt; and 2006 with the Soca Warriors in Germany.
"Today is a significant day for football in Trinidad and Tobago. The victory over Chile shows that we can match and play the same, or even a higher standard of football than many of the more established teams in the world.
"The victory also gives the general public something to be proud of. With all the negative things in the society today, the victory brings hope to this small island State,” Persad-Bissessar said.
She was also high in praise for FIFA Vice-President, Jack Warner, who is also the Minister of Works and Transport in her People’s Partnership Government and chairman of the United National Congress (UNC).
Persad-Bissessar said it was because of Warner’s standing in FIFA that football in Trinidad and Tobago is being recognised globally.
Warner also sent a congratulatory message to the Soca Princesses on their historic achievement.
“When people were saying that the Soca Princesses were just occupying space in the World Cup Finals, I was confident that the team would do very well in the opening match, under the astute leadership of coach, Even Pellerud. This team has a bright future ahead of them,” Warner said.
He also thanked the general public for the support for the opening two matches on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. He said he looks forward for greater support for the remaining matches, with the final carded for September 25 at the same venue.
Trinidad and Tobago play their second match on Wednesday, against Nigeria, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Mucurapo.
