(Works Minister Jack Warner greets Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at UWI, St. Augustine)

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced on Thursday that her government plans for tertiary education include an expansion of the campus for the University of the West Indies, St Augustine to south Trinidad.

Speaking at
at the matriculation and welcome ceremony held at the UWI’s St Augustine campus, she said the south campus would have programs in technology and engineering to care for the needs of the indutrial capital.

She said educational facilities would be added in Tobago as well. "The first of these is an integrated campus in Tobago, where UWI, Costaatt and UTT will partner together to have a campus located in Tobago,” she said.

She also spoke of the Works Ministry's plan for two new bus routes to the campus, one from the east, originating in Sangre Grande, and another from San Fernando.

The Public Service Transportation Corporation (PTSC) is introducing the new bus route from San Fernando to the UWI campus in St. Augustine, starting on Monday.

The first bus will leave the San Fernando terminal at five in the morning to arrive at the campus within 75 minutes. The hourly service will operate until 3:00 p.m. with stops at
Mon Repos, San Fernando Technical, Gasparillo, Chaguanas, Curepe and UWI.

The one way fare will be TT$8.00.

The service will also operate hourly on the reverse, starting at the UWI campus and ending in San Fernando, with the same stops. The first bus from UWI departs at 6:30 in the morning and the last bus will leave at 4.30 p.m.

The Ministry of Works said Friday the new service will provide approximately 462 seats daily, amounting to some 9,240 seats in each direction on a monthly basis.

It will offer a great convenience for UWI students who attend classes at various times during the day.
