Dookeran urges citizens to work together to develop T&T

Winston Dookeran has paid tribute to "all patriotic citizens...who have contributed in one form or fashion, to the development of our young nation".

The leader of the Congress of the People and Finance Minister in the new People's partnership government made the call in a message to mark Republic Day.

"Looking ahead, the challenge to our Nationhood as identified by our Hon. Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is to strengthen our capacity to achieve self-sufficiency, entrepreneurship and partnership, in all areas of national life," he said.

"Our focus must now be to steadfastly move from state dependence, to self reliance, from passive observers to active participants, if we are to take Trinidad and Tobago to the next level.

"As citizens we must become patriotic stakeholders in the inclusive development of all aspects of our rich diversity. We must be prepared to move away from the imprisonment of the old politics of the past, and embrace the refreshingly new people-centred Governance for the present, and future.

"This will be the real measure of success in our brave decision to become a Republican state," Dookeran said.

"Let us each resolve individually and collectively to put our shoulders to the wheel, and transform our society to an era of confidence, comfort and consensus, as we face the globally challenging economic times ahead.

"The quality of life for our children and grandchildren is in our hands," he declared.
