Arts and Multicultural Minister Winston Peters kept his promise and on Wednesday handed over a cheque for $1 million to the historic Little Carib Theatre to help with restoration work.
And he pledged that he will deliver the other $1.5 million needed to complete the project after the ministry receives its budgetary allocation for 2010-2011.
Chairman of the board Michael Germain, who received the money on behalf of the theatre, said he expects to complete the restoration by the end of the year.
“Long before NAPA, there was the Little Carib Theatre that molded the life of a lot of artistic people in Trinidad and Tobago and will continue to do that for a long time to come and it is worth preserving,” Peters told media after presenting the cheque.
Dance legend Beryl McBernie opened the Little Carib in 1948 as a centre for the creative arts. The board plans to make sure her dream remains alive.
