Works Minister Jack Warner announced Tuesday that the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) plans to introduce 38 new routes by the end of September to meet the needs people who use the service.
In a media release Warner said, "This is another attempt by the People’s Partnership Government under Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar to bring relief to our rural communities which have been neglected for years."
Warner pointed out that since assuming office he has been bombarded with complaints about the inefficiency of the PTSC, especially in the rural communities.
He noted that the PTSC has acquired 85 additional buses and recruited about 200 new drivers to meet the demand. He added that the bus company intends to improve the existing services and to introduce new routes to expand the for transport network.
When the service is in operation the PTSC will be povding an additional 20,936 seats daily.
Warner said the PTSC is putting emphasis on the use of 45 seater buses on the Port-of-Spain to San Fernando route from Monday, which is one of the busiest routies.
He said the move is to significantly increase seating capacity and eliminate standing, which is a prominent feature with the larger articulated buses.
