Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh on Thursday told reporters at the post-Cabinet press conference at the Coco Reef hotel, Tobago, Cabinet has agreed to award 324 scholarships this year.
The bill for the scholarships will be $27 million annually.
Gopeesingh said 54 of the awards will be open scholarships and 270 additional scholarships.
He also said the winner of the President's Medal for academic excellence will be announced next week.
Gopeesingh said open scholarships were awarded to three students in business, three in environmental studies, three in language arts, nine in mathematics, three in modern studies, 29 in science, two in technological studies and two in visual and performing arts.
He added that Cabinet will also offer financial assistance to private special schools registered with the Education Ministry. These schools cater for students who have special educational needs.
He said the funding has been increased to $20,970,850 for these schools. He added that Cabinet has also agreed to hold national consultations with stakeholders on the needs of about 13,000 students with disabilities.
