300 trees will line Uriah Butler highway; PM plants first one

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar planted a tree Saturday to mark the start of a program that will see hundreds of trees lining the Uriah Butler Highway.

And in a brief address to those gathered to witness the event, she said she will not forget the people while she is away from the country for the next 10 days.

Persad-Bissessar leaves for New York Monday for her third overseas trip since taking office. During the visit she will address the United Nations at the invitation of the UN Secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon. Labour Minister Errol Mc Leod will be acting PM during her absence.

"Whilst I am gone, you will be in thoughts and my heart and I hope I will be in your hearts too," she said as the small crowd cheered.

Works Minister Jack Warner and Environment Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal were also present to help the Prime Minister plant the tree near the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, which is in Warner's Chaguanas West constsituency.

It was a symbolic gesture to mark the 120th day of the People's Partnership taking office and a continuation of the Clean and Beautify Trinidad and Tobago program that Persad-Bissessar launched shortly after taking office.

She appealed to citizens to continue the C&BT&T drive, become a "planting nation" and make the country "green everywhere".

The Prime Minister also reminded citizens that an amendment to the Green Fund legislation will allow non-profit and non-government organisations to access funding for certain environmental activities.

Chaguanas-based Centrascape Garden Centre donated the
300 trees for the program and will oversee the planting and maintenance along the roadway.

Managing Director Ballyram Beharry said he is passionate about more green space everywhere and suggested that government employ workers of the CEPEP program to take care of the trees.
