PM Kamla joins Indian movie star in NY parade to celebrate India independence

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be the guest of honour at the 30th India Day Parade in New York City on Aug. 15. The parade coincides with India's 63rd anniversary of independence from Britain.

In a media release the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) announced that Persad-Bissessar will march alongside Indian actress Preity Zinta, the parade's grand marshal.

"We are delighted to have her as guest of honor this year and we celebrate her election to such a prestigious position in government of a great country (Trinidad and Tobago)," FIA said.

"This is yet another milestone that our community in North America should be proud of," Nirav Mehta, president of FIA, said in the release.

The FIA of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut is one of the largest and most powerful umbrella organizations in the Indian community, representing over 300,000 Asian-Indians.

The FIA was established in 1970 and has become "an effective mouthpiece and mobilizer for the community" the organisation said in its release.

The annual India Day Parade started in 1981 and is held in New York City to present progress and unity to the many diversified ethnic communities in the area.
