Obit: Dorothy Cummings - a lady of class

Anyone who knew Dorothy Cuumings would tell you she was a woman of class.

She was a dedicated and loyal supporter of the United National Congress (UNC), which she joined in 1999 after walking away from the People's National Movement (PNM).

Like so many loyal supporters of the PNM she felt her party had changed for the worse and had lost touch with people. She saw hope in the UNC, which was in government at the time and then Prime Minister Basdeo Panday warmly embraced her as he did others who left the PNM and migrated to the UNC's 'big tent'.

In the 2000 general election and subsequent elections, Dorothy was a fixture at every UNC meeting and rally, the party's most vocal flag bearer; in 2010 she was missing, having been felled by a stroke that would eventually cause her death.

Dorothy died on Tuesday at her home in Cocorite. She was 73. She had eight children - four boys and four girls.

Dorothy was a simple woman, a kind soul who loved her country.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Wade Mark described her as a true patriot. And former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday said Dorothy was an example of what loyalty can be.

He added, “She was a source of great inspiration" to many people in the party he founded.
