Moonilal visits Staten Island landfill; sees lessons for Beethan site

Environment Dr Roodal Moonilal on Monday visited the Staten Island landfill in New York which is to be created into a national park. In an interview with Newsday, Moonilal said he has collected valuable data from the authorities.

the gases from the landfill have been sold. Moonilal told the paper he finds it fascinating that a profit can be made out of a landfill.

"This is something which we will be looking at for the Beetham landfill in the near future.”
He told the paper that having seen how a landfill can be created into a national park, he wants to investigate further on how the Government of Trinidad and Tobago can do the same about the the Beetham landfill.

The Staten Island landfill was opened in 1948, in what was then a rural agricultural area, it became one of the largest refuse sites in human history.
