Lee Sing to be new Mayor of Port of Spain

Businessman Louis Lee Sing will be the new mayor of the City of Port of Spain.

Lee Sing is a loyal member of the opposition People's National Movement (PNM), which has a majority in the Port of Spain City Corporation.

The party's General Council has approved Lee Singh to become the next mayor of Port of Spain, a report in the Trinidad Express stated Friday.

It said Alderman Lee Sing is expected to be elected next Tuesday.

The governing People's Partnership (PP) has four members on the council - three representing the Congress of the People (COP) and the fourth representing the United National Congress (UNC).

The report said the PNM General Council has also recommended Deputy Leader Nafeesa Mohammed to chair the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and Clyde Paul will become Mayor of Port Fortin, the third corporation that is under PNM control.
The PP won control of the 11 others in the July 26 Local Government Election (LGE).

Khadijah Ameen is expected to chair the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation (TPRC). However the rising star of the governing PP has not confirmed that.

Ameen, who has been a councillor since 2003, told reporters, "We are still discussing who the chairman will be.

"The election of a chairman takes place Tuesday next week, by that time a firm decision will be made," she said.

However Ameen said she would be happy to serve. "I have been very active. So I feel if given the opportunity I can do the job.

"But I am certain that whatever decision the party makes, they will choose a very competent person. If it is myself I am committed to serve if it someone else I am committed to work with that person," she said.
