Hanoomansingh to receive honorary doctorate from UWI

Broadcaster, businessman and cultural icon Hans Hanoomansingh will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies at the convocation at St. Augustine in October this year.

He is among four Trinidad and Tobago (TT) nationals who will receive the honour along with 11 other persons.

The other citizens of Trinidad and Tobago getting the doctorates are Doddridge Alleyne, Diana Mahabir-Wyatt and Thomas Gatcliffe. Each is getting the award for excelling and contributing significantly in her/his respective field.

Alleyne, 83, is former permanent secretary and served as head of the Public Service. In 2003 he was awarded the Chaconia Gold medal "for long and meritorious service to TT".

Hanoomansingh, who is currently chairman and CEO of Heritage Communications Ltd., began his media career in the 1960s at what was at the time Radio Guardian and poineered Indian music into the mainstream broadcasting culture.

Last year Hanoomaninsgh received the TT Publishers’ and Broadcaster’s Association “Excellence in Media Award.”

During his lengthy career in broadcasting Hanoomansingh had the opportunity to meet and interview several prominent international figures including Mother Teresa.

Mahabir Wyatt is known as a champion of the rights of domestic workers, women, children and the elderly. She is also the co-founder of the Shelter for Battered Women and Children, and the Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

She served as an independent Senator for 12 years, she has also worked for changes in legislation governing children, industrial relations, and equal opportunities for minorities.

Gatcliffe is a respected business leader and is the holder of the Chaconia Gold Medal for business enterprise.
