Flood damage runs into millions in T&T

The misuse of the environment is one of the causes of the floods that wreaked havoc all over Trinidad this week.

That's the view of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has been surveying the damage and co-ordinating relief.

On Monday when heavy rains caused what was described as the worst floods ever to hit the country Persad-Bissessar put aside her personal business and got on a helicopter to have a look at the extent of the damage.

She immediately got her entire government on the job with other members of the cabinet setting up relief centres for flood victims. The next day, she announced measures to provide compensation for those worst hit by the floods and she cancelled a planned cabinet retreat in Tobago to attend to the people's business.

He works minister, Jack Warner, is meeting Thursday with flood experts from Denmark to discuss Trinidad and Tobago's flooding problems with the hope of finding solutions.

On Wednesday, Warner met with Yang Youming, China's Ambassador Plenipotentiary, who offeres his country's services to help find a solution to the flooding problem.

The government's response to the crisis has won praise from the local media.

In an editorial, the Trinidad Express said said the Prime Minister "adopted an admirably sensitive and proactive response to the widespread floods...Not only did (she) immediately cancel the Cabinet's planned retreat to Tobago, but she also toured by helicopter many of the areas hardest hit.

"Meanwhile, Government MPs and Local Government councillors were also on the move, meeting affected persons and undertaking to do what they could to relieve distress. Such measures have so far ranged from compensation for property damage, supply of foodstuffs, and even replacement of sodden school books."
