The Sunday Guardian says an investigation that it has carried out has found that Trinidad and Tobago taxpayers are facing a bill estimated at $200 million for repairs at the $226 million Beetham Wastewater Treatment Plant.It said the anaerobic digester berms failed a decade ago due to poor designs. At the time Ganga Singh was the Public Utilities Minister in the Panday UNC government.
The paper said its investigations revealed that the digester berms wre designed for three lagoons expected to treat the sewerage from the city of Port-of-Spain and industrial wastewater from Angostura Ltd.
Contruction has been halted, the paper said, and waste continues to flow freely into the Caroni Swamp, posing a serious health hazard on the environment and wildlife.
