The latest opinion poll on the Local Government Election (LGE) suggests that the People's Partnership is way ahead of the People’s National Movement (PNM).
It said the governing coalition's widespread appeal is due to a combination of the popularity of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Works Minister Jack Warner and the strong mood for change in local governance.
But that doesn't bother PNM leader Dr Keith Rowley. He told reporters the PNM is busy running a good campaign and is not depending on any poll. He is confident that people would use their "good judgment" and vote for the PNM in the July 26 election.
The poll conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (Nacta) suggest that the People’s Partnership will retain local government seats it now holds and is tied with or ahead of the PNM in several corporations that the PNM controlled when the election was called.
Rowley said that is not what he is hearing on the ground. He said the PNM has a commitment to local government reform, adding that the party has "very carefully" selected candidates for the elections "in order to have quality service in the corporations, the best service."
He is not over confident, but is optimistic. "We’re running a good campaign and we are expecting the electorate to respond accordingly," he said.
